The Peruvian people chose the left-wing socialist approach and liberated themselves from neoliberal economic policies and voted in the presidential elections for the left-wing candidate Pedro Castillo, who is awaiting the official announcement of his victory by the National Election Arbitration Committee, which is currently considering the objections of the pro-US right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori.
According to the semi-final figures, Castillo won 50.14 percent of the vote, compared to 49.86 percent for his rival Fujimori, where 17,616,950 citizens participated in the elections.
Fujimori was quick to cast doubt on the election results, with Castillo leading by 49,420 votes and alleging fraud in the vote count.
The National Electoral Court has called statements about doubts about the legality of the electoral process irresponsible, while the Election Commission is currently scrutinizing Fujimori's allegations and reviewing tens of thousands of ballot papers it contested.
In turn, the election observation mission of the Organization of American States confirmed that it did not record any irregularities in the presidential elections, which it described as positive and said that it did not “observe any serious irregularities,” noting that “a positive electoral process during which significant improvements were recorded between the first and second rounds.”
Fujimori mobilized her supporters in the center of the capital, Lima, and some of them headed to the headquarters of the electoral arbitration commission in charge of monitoring the polls, where hundreds of Castillo supporters have also gathered since last Wednesday, at a time when the police imposed a security cordon in order to avoid any confrontation between the two groups, while Interim President Francisco Sagaste appealed to the parties Actors on both sides to remain calm, pointing out that the country is currently going through a “complex and difficult period.”
Many American leaders were quick to congratulate Castillo on the victory, including Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, Bolivian President Luis Arce, and Nicaraguan President through his deputy and government spokeswoman Rosario Moreau, in addition to former Bolivian presidents Evo Morales and Brazilian Lula da Silva. in the popular struggle in our dear Latin America.
Castillo, a 51-year-old teacher and trade unionist, proposed in his electoral program a series of nationalization plans for vital sectors, stopping some imports to boost local industry, canceling tax exemptions, and increasing government controls to strengthen the economy.
Fujimori faces the prospect of imprisonment, as prosecutors had requested 30 years in prison in early March and her husband, Marc Vito Viña, 22 years in prison as part of an investigation into her possible involvement in the Odebrecht scandal, named after the giant Brazilian construction group that admitted to paying bribes to many Latin American leaders.
Fujimori spent 16 months in pretrial detention in this case for illegal funding of her previous presidential campaigns.
