Despite its recent cultivation, the pistachio tree occupies an important position among the fruitful trees in As-Suwayda Governorate, which has witnessed a gradual increase in the areas planted with pistachios and a good production that achieved returns for its farmers.

The director of As-Suwayda Agriculture, Ayham Hamed, told SANA reporter that the most areas of pistachio cultivation in As-Suwayda are the villages and towns of Al-Mujaimir, Al-Quraya, Bard, Al-Afina, Al-Aree, Al-Tha’lah, Sahwa Al-Balata, Jbeeb, Umrah, Baka and the lands west of the city of As-Suwayda, pointing out that the most prominent cultivated varieties are Al-Ashuri, Al-Ajami, Al-Batori and Nab Al-Jamal.

According to the head of the Pistachio Division in the Department of Specialized Offices in the Directorate of Agriculture, Engineer Wissam Khaddaj, there has been a gradual increase in the areas planted with pistachios in As-Suwayda, exceeding more than a thousand dunums during the past ten years, indicating that the governorate’s annual production ranges on average between 125 and 550 tons, where last season it reached 362 Tons.

Khaddaj explained that the cultivation of pistachios in As-Suwayda succeeded due to the availability of environmental and climatic conditions for their cultivation and the interest in them by many farmers, pointing out that there is an economic feasibility, especially during the past few years, as the serviced areas achieve good returns.

He stated that the governorate's climate and soil contribute to the good taste of pistachio fruits, which facilitates marketing operations, pointing out that the average production of a tree in As-Suwayda ranges between 2 and 5 kg of shelled pistachio fruits.

The pistachio seedlings are currently being produced according to Khaddaj within the Arra Spring Center, pointing out that during the current season 15,000 grafts were sold, including 1,200 grafted and the rest with seed for planting, while the next year's plan is to produce 1,000 grafted seedlings and 30,000 seed seedlings.

Khaddaj indicated that the Directorate has prepared an integrated management program for pistachio pests based on the results of pheromone traps readings, field follow-up by technicians, and technical bulletins received from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Directorate of the Pistachio Office at the Ministry, in order to benefit from it by farmers to avoid these pests, stressing the importance of taking care of planting this tree, which It is considered one of the perennial trees, and its tenderness increases with age, and it is characterized by its great resistance to climatic changes.

Khaddaj stressed the importance of providing support to pistachio farmers to reduce production costs through the Agricultural Production Support Fund, and attention to marketing production and breaking mediation circles in a way that secures a better return for farmers.

Pistachio cultivation was introduced to the province in the eighties of the last century through the Green Belt Project, which included areas and villages in the second settlement area, whose rainfall ranges between 250 and 300 millimeters.

The pistachio occupies the fifth rank among the governorates in terms of cultivated areas, and this tree occupies the same rank in the governorate after apple, vine, olive and almond trees, with an area of ​​5930 dunums, comprising about 120 thousand trees, of which the fruit is more than 97 thousand trees.
