Play-chicken: Is the schnitzel going to increase by tens of percent?
The effects of the war in Ukraine on the economy are often linked to energy and grain prices - with a dramatic rise in oil prices and a rise in the price of flour and its products.
But how does the Russian invasion affect the price of chicken in Israel - are Friday's schnitzels also going to cost us much more?

Anyone who walks the streets of ultra-Orthodox cities or neighborhoods will very quickly come across signs calling for donations to the needy under the headline: "Mom, you promised us a chicken to sit on."
Is this question going to be asked even in more established homes?
It is very possible that after the price of the steak also comes the turn of the schnitzel:
the suppliers of Israeli poultry products plan to raise prices and pass on to consumers an increase of about 30%, according to them, in the cost of raising poultry.
The main increase in prices, according to the poultry farmers, is due to the rise in corn and wheat prices, which stems from supply problems that began with the corona and worsened greatly following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The price of corn, for example, has risen by 16.25% since February 24, 2022 - the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, by 36.25% since the beginning of the year, and by 164.91% since the low price of corn reached in late April 2020 due to the outbreak of the corona plague.
The price increase is expected to vary from supplier to supplier and also depends on the type of agreements and customers they provide - large retail chains or local butchers.

The owners are also the customers
Industry source explained to Walla!
Money: "In the field of animal mixtures, prices fall or rise depending on the increase or decrease in the prices of the raw materials that make them up, and these are rolled out to poultry farmers and suppliers. There are several companies in Israel in the field, but two lead it: Once a month,
the shareholders of these companies are also their main customers and therefore have no interest in raising prices, but in pricing according to the fluctuations of the wheat, corn, barley and other blend markets.
Usually, when one of the raw materials goes up, say corn, the composition of the mixture also changes accordingly - the mixture institute works according to a mathematical formula to reduce the dose of corn from the mixture it produces and insert the other ingredients in a balance between the ingredients. Attempt to regulate the effect of one component or another whose price has risen.
The problem during this period, according to the same source, is that all the raw materials that make up the mixtures have become more expensive, so meat and poultry prices will continue to rise.
However, it is worth remembering that in the end it is all a matter of supply and demand, and in the case of poultry it is a product with a relatively low shelf life.
"Today, about 90% of the poultry sold is chilled, and not frozen, and in a shelf life of 5 days, it will be difficult to raise prices sharply."
At the beginning of March, Tnuva announced that it intends to increase the price of its red meat products by about 8%, and consumers' eyes are now on the various retailers in the expectation that these will absorb, at least in part, the rise in prices.

Proteins for the rich
It should be noted that poultry is one of the cheapest, most popular and accessible sources of protein for the Israeli population.
It is not for nothing that one of the favorites of Israelis is schnitzel.
An increase in the price of chicken, therefore, may harm the nutritional fabric of the weakened populations in the country, while those who have so far consumed organic poultry (whose price is also rising) can switch to alternative sources such as fish.

Do not expect a significant increase
We turned to the Ministry of Agriculture to find out if regulatory measures are planned that will try to prevent the sharp price increases, for example by helping to diversify the import sources of poultry feed mixes.
The ministry said:
"Animal food costs have risen in recent months, in line with the global trend affected by the war in Europe
. "In
addition to alternative import sources,
the Ministry of Agriculture clarifies that the forage industry is not under supervision, and therefore there is free competition in the industry. However, it should be noted that according to professionals in the Ministry of Agriculture, its market structure and competition
