FIFA raffled this Friday in Zurich, Switzerland, the pairings (playoffs) of the qualifying rounds that will decide the last teams qualified for the Qatar World Cup 2022.

For the American continent, the selected team that occupies the 5th place of the qualifying rounds will be measured against the representative of the Asian Football Confederation.

Meanwhile, the fourth of the Concacaf will do it against the representative of Oceania.

These duels will be played as a single match on June 13 and 14, 2022 and various press reports suggest that Qatar could be the designated neutral venue.

The European playoff

FIFA also raffled this Friday the new UEFA playoff format, which delivers the three remaining places in that area.

The one that attracts the most attention is the one that has Italy and Portugal as protagonists, since if necessary one of these teams will be left out of the World Cup in Qatar.

The semifinals will take place on March 24, 20222 and the decisive game on March 29.

Key B has Russia facing Poland and Sweden against the Czech Republic, so we could be watching a World Cup without one or two of the most powerful forwards on the planet;

the Polish Robert Lewandowski and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The third key is the one that has resounded the most in this repechage draw, because it has the last two European champions;

Italy and Portugal, which to advance in their duels against North Macedonia and Turkey would have to eliminate each other.

Italy (6) and Portugal (8) are among the top 10 teams to command the FIFA rankings.

The 32 places for the World Cup are distributed as follows:

  • Qatar (host country).

  • Africa 5.

  • Asia 4.5.

  • CONCACAF 3.5.

  • CONMEBOL 4.5.

  • Oceania 0.5.

  • UEFA will be 13.

For Qatar 2022, in addition to the host team, Brazil and Argentina have already secured places from CONMEBOL and ten UEFA teams: Germany, Denmark, Belgium, France, Croatia, Spain, Serbia, England, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
