Pope Francis takes a dim view of “
signs of a return to the past
” in Europe with the rise of “
nationalism and populism
”, which pushes to erect “
walls
” between countries.
He shared this conviction on November 16 at the Astalli center, founded in Rome by the Jesuits, to receive refugees.
He criticized “
migration policies
” based on “
the construction of camps
” for detention and “
safe zones
”.
He also announced the central theme of his thirty-fifth trip outside Italy, from December 2 to 6 in Cyprus, then in Athens on the island of Lesbos.
