Season after season, a number of football clubs are releasing new jerseys, some even bring up to three shirts per season on the market, an away jersey, one for home games and a third shirt for international competition.

From a financial perspective, that makes sense.

Brentford FC from the English Premier League would like to take a step back in this development.

The club wants to wear the home shirt again next season, with which it already appears in the current 2021/2022 season.

The goal is to become more sustainable and the fans should save money, according to the club.

“We believe in making football more affordable for our fans and we understand the need for the game to be more sustainable,” said Brentford managing director Jon Varney.

"It's just a minor thing, but we believe it will help," said Varney, who also reported fan approval for this venture.

The home jersey currently costs 49 pounds in the official club fan shop, or around 58 euros.

Brentford is one of the underdogs in the English league.

With an average attendance of 16,725 fans per home game, the newcomer is also in last place in the league comparison.

In view of the smaller fan base, foregoing a new home jersey should not mean any major financial damage;

the Premier League clubs get their main income from the television business.

The league earns 1.7 billion euros per season.

For the club, the campaign should therefore mean more of an image boost.

The topics of sustainability and environmental protection also concern football, and jerseys made of polyester are particularly harmful to the climate.

"This is a step in the right direction, to help the environment a little," said Varney.
