Premier League plane to fly 119 km ... rain of criticism after Manchester United's 10-minute flight to Leicester

To play Leicester this Saturday afternoon, Manchester United players flew. As usual except that between the two villages

The world of football is still far from being able (or wanting?) To reduce its carbon emissions to zero.

And this weekend, it is not the Manchester United club leading by example.

This Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., the team of Paul Pogba and Raphaël Varane play a match of the 8th day of the Premier League in Leicester.

Between the city in the north-west of England and the city in the center next to Birmingham, there is a distance of 170.71 km, reduced to 119 km as the crow flies.

Driving well, this corresponds to two hours of driving.

But the Mancunians did not choose this option.

They made the trip by air.

Everyone got on a private jet to make the trip.

No one had time to sit down.

According to the British daily The Mirror, the trip took just 10 minutes.

We don't know how much it cost.

The highway was under construction

In England, this unnecessary trip provokes reactions that are not pleasant for Cristiano Ronaldo's team.

Social networks are having a great time criticizing this anti-ecological move.

The club justifies it by closing a highway between the two cities for work but it does not pass anyway.

Especially since the club Mancunien signed a few days ago, a partnership with the company "Renewable Energy Group" specializing in biodiesel and renewable energies.

The statement between the two sides said it wanted to "raise awareness of how people can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for our planet."

This Saturday, the intention is a bit of a laugh.

To defend itself, the club claims "to have reduced its annual carbon emissions by more than 2,700 tonnes since 2008 by achieving 12 consecutive years of energy and carbon reductions thanks to the club's program".

According to a simulator's calculation, this 10-minute flight produced 3.3 tonnes of CO2 for the outbound flight alone.
