This is a traditional promise of presidential candidates.
In 2007, Nicolas Sarkozy had promised the construction of 24,000 prison places, and even 30,000 during the 2012 campaign. Finally, with the alternation, most of these projects were abandoned by the socialist power.
In 2017, Emmanuel Macron had promised the construction of 15,000 prison places in five years, but this figure should ultimately be reduced to 7,000.

Xavier Bertrand, who wants "
anyone who commits an offense or a crime [have] the certainty that they will be punished
", is part of this long heritage and proposes for his part to go
"at least"
from 60,000 to 80,000 prison places, an increase of 20,000.
To achieve this, the right-wing candidate wishes to use "
sites disused in detention centers for the least dangerous delinquents
" and proposes that "
the communes which will accept to receive some [see] their overall operating endowment greatly increase
".
Is this quantified target set by Xavier Bertrand sufficient?
