The protein supply of the steadily growing world population is an urgent global problem.

Possibly insects can contribute to the solution.

Rostock - The young Rostock start-up company Inova Protein is expanding and is investing in a production hall.

The goal is the production of insect meal, which according to the managing director Raijana Schiemann should serve as food.

In the future, 1.5 tons of mealworm flour will be produced per month in the almost 800 square meter hall.

Construction begins on Wednesday with the groundbreaking; Schiemann assumed a total investment of around two million euros.

Grapes are delicious and ripen from around August.

Harvesting continues until autumn, unless hungry animals were quicker.

But the grapes can be protected.

Probably a little less grapes, but a lot of quality: The German winemakers start with the main harvest.

Also in the flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Do not knead the spelled dough for long

As an alternative to wheat flour, spelled is increasingly coming into play as a nutritious and nutty-aromatic grain.

But can it be used in the kitchen in a similar way to wheat?

The young crew is still working in a basement room at Rostock University with 150 boxes of mealworms and beetles in different stages of development.

“There will be 25,000 boxes in the hall,” said Co-Managing Director Christian Baudisch.

The aim is to fully automate production and quality control.

This is part of the innovation concept.

For Schiemann, the advantages of the insect protein with the nutty taste compared to proteins from livestock farming are obvious: There is less CO2, water consumption and feed consumption are minimal, and there is no waste.

The market analysis shows that there are currently only a few producers for growing demand.

Inova Protein was founded in 2020 and received the Inno Award for the development, production and marketing of insect meal last June.

It was said at the time that not only those who were environmentally and health conscious benefited from the project.

It is also suitable for athletes or pet food manufacturers.

"From a nutritional point of view, insects are well suited for human nutrition," is the assessment of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment.

They are rich in energy and nutrients, have high levels of amino acids that are essential for humans and unsaturated fatty acids.

In May, the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) was the first insect to be approved as a novel food by the EU.

According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL), the dried mealworm larvae can be sold whole or ground.

It can also be used as an ingredient of up to ten percent in various foods, for example pasta or biscuits.

"It is one food among many and an enrichment of the menu," said BVL expert Evelyn Breitweg-Lehmann.

And ultimately it is a matter of taste that consumers have to decide.

But it is a valuable protein.

However, the manufacturers would have to print a note on the label about possible cross-reactions to allergies to crustaceans or house dust mites.
