A 40-year-old male professor from Hokkaido University who visited China in September was found to be detained by Chinese authorities. Sino-Japanese sources revealed on the 18th. The charges are unknown, but they may be accused of anti-spy laws or criminal law violations. The professor is Japanese and has worked in the Ministry of Defense Defense Institute and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chinese authorities enacted anti-spy laws that defined espionage in 2014 and enacted national safety laws for crackdown in 2015. He was increasingly wary of information gathering activities in Japan by foreigners.

In China, a total of 13 Japanese men and women were detained for 15 years since they were related to espionage. Both are civilians, and this is the first time that the associate professor of National University has been detained. (Beijing)
