Bastorf - At the Garvsmühlen organic farm near Rerik, the 10 to 15 centimeter Hokkaido pumpkins are currently being harvested.

Farmer Ulrich Kotzbauer reckons with up to 15,000 fruits after sowing around 5,000 seeds under foil in the spring.

Hokkaido pumpkins are very popular in the trade, they are completely usable except for the seeds in the middle.

This year's harvest is entirely intended for Berlin consumers.

According to the environmental protection organization BUND, pumpkins from organic cultivation will continue to gain in importance.

"Pumpkins are still an absolute niche product, they are the big hit," said BUND agricultural expert Burkhard Roloff.

All farm shops, but also supermarkets with organic own brands, stocked these healthy and inexpensive fruits.

These characteristics made them attractive, especially in autumn.

The pumpkins only take up a small part of the total of 300 hectares, said Kotzbauer.

Grain and lupins are grown on most of the area; only three hectares are so-called special areas on which cabbage or pumpkins grow.

Not all soils in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are suitable for growing pumpkins, said Kotzbauer.

This can also be seen in the cultivation statistics: As the Ministry of Agriculture reported with reference to figures from the State Statistical Office, pumpkins were grown on 47 hectares last year.

That corresponded to 2.5 percent of the vegetable growing area.

In 2019 it was still 18.3 hectares and thus 0.8 percent of the vegetable growing area.
