A landslide caused a serious injury this Sunday during a running race in the Canigou massif (Pyrénées-Orientales).

This man was transported “in absolute urgency” by helicopter to the Perpignan hospital center for treatment, while four other people were injured more slightly, indicates the prefecture.

"A very big landslide" took place at the end of the race, when there were only 20 riders left out of the 750 entered in this "Canigo Championship", explain the organizers.

The accident occurred at 11:40 a.m., 20 minutes before the scheduled closure of this emblematic peak in the region, which rises to 2,785 m.

"The helicopter intervened within half an hour," they point out.

An ongoing investigation

The seriously injured is a 68-year-old man, specifies France Bleu, on its website.

He suffers from a broken femur which would have caused a hemorrhage, adds the radio.

Beforehand, the organization claims to have “purged” the route taken by the runners, removing the unstable stones which could have been there.

"An investigation is underway," said the prefecture of Pyrénées-Orientales.

According to the first testimonies collected by France Bleu, the landslide was due to a rock block which broke off in an area where there was no one: pieces then rolled down the slope and hit race participants.
