Coincidence or not, the discovery of the body was made a few hours after the funeral in Lévis, near Quebec, of the two girls aged 6 and 11. Their bodies were found in a wood in the town of Saint-Apollinaire (Quebec) on July 11, causing a wave of emotion throughout the province. The premier of the province François Legault said he was “ overwhelmed ” by this “ national tragedy ”.

Significant searches, land and air, have been carried out since July 8 in this wooded region some forty kilometers southwest of Quebec, to find Martin Carpentier. The parents of two little girls were separated. The father of the family's car had been found after having rolled over several times, but the police who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident had found the vehicle empty, its occupants not found. An Amber alert was issued the next day.
The bodies of the two girls were found a few days later in a wood. The autopsy findings have not been revealed, and the father's motives remain a mystery.
