With the increasing interest in economic growth and human development globally, the use of renewable energy has become one of the main axes towards transitioning to a sustainable energy system that provides stability, food and environmental security that stimulates growth at various levels.

The term renewable energy expresses energy resulting from natural processes without human intervention and is constantly renewed in nature, such as sunlight, geothermal energy, wind, sea waves, running water energy or falling from slopes, in addition to biomass energy in its various forms.

One of the most important advantages of renewable energy is that it is sustainable, free, and clean. It can be used as an alternative to fossil fuels, whose burning causes major environmental and climate problems that the world has begun to suffer from.

Particular interest in generating electricity from renewable energy sources in the world has increased, as it is one of the elements of the national energy mix in most countries, as the International Energy Agency announced today that renewable energy will represent about 95 percent of the increase in electricity production capacity in the world until the end of 2026, while solar energy will constitute half of this. the increase.

According to Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the Agency, the record increases this year in the production of electricity from renewable energy sources amounted to 290 gigawatts, in another indication of the emergence of a new global energy economy, pointing out that the rise in commodity and energy prices presents new challenges for the renewable energy sector, while high prices Fossil fuels make renewable energy sources more competitive.

International interest in renewable energy is growing more and more during the current stage to reduce the effects of climate change and achieve sustainable development goals, as the enactment of legislation and the adoption of plans, work programs and incentive policies have led to more technological progress, lower costs, accelerated use of it, and an increase in its share in the national energy mix in many developed countries. and developing.

At the global level, there are currently 179 countries that have specific legislation for the contribution of renewable energy in the sectors of electricity production, heating, cooling and transportation, while the Arab region is still far from this trend, as it depends about 94 percent on fossil fuels as a main source of electricity production with a modest contribution from renewable energy sources despite These sources are largely available in it, such as solar energy, wind energy and river water. Because of this growing interest in renewable energy, Syria has started many steps towards investing in this field and encouraging it, as it was issued a few days ago, Law No. 32 of 2021, which stipulates that it is permissible to purchase electricity produced from renewable energy projects.

According to the data, the Ministry of Electricity’s strategy until 2030 includes the implementation of renewable energy projects “wind and solar” with a total capacity of 2500 megawatts, which will make the renewable energy sector witness a quantum leap through the demand of many investors for these projects in light of the urgent need for additional alternative sources Renewable supports the electrical system in Syria.
