A delegation of senior Sudanese visited Israel this week in order to promote diplomatic ties between the two countries, the French website Intelligence Online reported.
According to the report, the visit of the delegation was borrowed and managed by the Mossad and not by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, contrary to custom.
At the same time, the Jewish Insider news site published that the US State Department sent a message to Israel that it should refrain from promoting ties with Sudan and establishing diplomatic relations with it, in light of Washington's opposition to the military rule in Khartoum.
"We urge Israel to join us and the international community and to pressure Sudan's military leaders to relinquish power in favor of a civilian transitional government," a State Department source told Jewish Insider.
He added that "the United States will not renew the delayed aid to the Sudanese government until the return of power to a civilian government."
In October 2020, Israel and Sudan, mediated by the United States, declared normalization of relations between the two countries, and in January 2021, the Sudanese government signed the declaratory part of the Abrahamic Accords. In October 2021, a military coup took place in Sudan, And the dissolution of the Provisional Sovereignty Council that has ruled the country since the ouster of dictator Omar al-Bashir.
The Biden administration is boycotting the new regime in Sudan, thus creating a paradoxical situation in which the United States is pressuring Israel to suspend the processes of normalization and the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Arab state.
"The United States has strongly supported the decision of the Sudanese Civilian Transitional Government to improve its relations with Israel, and praised the commitments made by both sides in this regard," the State Department source said. "This country's foreign to an unsustainable move."
Despite repeated pleas from the administration, Israel refrained from condemning the military coup in Sudan and the new regime, and continued to maintain ties with it.
In the past, Sudan served as part of the smuggling route of weapons from Iran to the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza.
In 2009, near the end of Operation Cast Lead, the Air Force attacked a convoy of trucks and an Iranian warship in a combined operation with the naval commando, and according to foreign publications, at least two more Israeli attacks took place in the country.
Following the ouster of al-Bashir in 2019, the interim government in Khartoum sought to change its attitude toward Israel and establish diplomatic ties with it, in exchange for removing it from the US list of countries that support terrorism.
The United States agreed to the request and even agreed to transfer economic aid to Sudan, but changed its position after the military coup that took place in Sudan last year.
