In more than three months, the 2022 World Cup is expected to open in Qatar, but the chaos in the qualifiers for the tournament is also going to affect the opening game of the biggest event in the world.
According to a report from Argentina, FIFA is seriously considering bringing up the first match of the tournament between the hosts and Ecuador, which is currently scheduled to take place on Monday, November 21, by one day. This is because since Germany 2006, only two matches have been played before the official opening ceremony of the tournament, with one of which the host team participates, which has already become a tradition.
The problem this year is that Qatar is scheduled to play on the second day of the tournament, before which the Netherlands face Senegal, and England face Iran.
According to the proposal, the host match will be moved a day earlier and the match between the Netherlands and Senegal will be moved to Monday (November 21).
In order for this change to be approved, the FIFA Council Chamber, which consists of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the presidents of the six confederations around the world, must hold a vote on the matter.
