Former US President Donald Trump almost fired his daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner on Twitter during his tenure in the White House.

However, he was eventually persuaded not to do so by his chief of staff, John Kelly.

In her new book, Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America, journalist Maggie Haberman revealed that Trump referred to the firing of his daughter and son-in-law - both then serving as senior White House advisers - in meetings with Kelly and White House Counsel Don McGahn.

According to the barman, Trump suggested that he would announce the two's departure on Twitter, but Kelly stopped him.

The two remained in their positions throughout Trump's term and were not fired.

In addition, the barman wrote that Trump used to joke about his son-in-law in private and even said that "he sounds like a child", in 2017, according to CNN.

In his book, Kushner wrote about his and his wife's strained relationship with Kelly, the former chief of staff, and even said that he pushed Ivanka in a moment of anger.

In 2018, Kelly downgraded Kushner's security classification from "Top Secret."
