Rep. Thomas Massie is shown smiling and holding a rifle. The image has outraged victims of massive gun attacks. It was shared days after a teenager gunned down four classmates at Oxford high school.

Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, who represents the state of Kentucky, posted a Christmas picture on Twitter Saturday showing everyone in his family carrying guns, causing outrage.

Massie's publication became a trend on social networks, especially since

this week the country experienced a new tragedy

, when a 15-year-old student killed four classmates and injured seven others in a shooting at an Oxford secondary school , in Michigan.

"

Merry Christmas! PS: Santa, please bring ammo,

" was the message in the representative's tweet.

The photo shows him armed and smiling along with six members of his family, who are also seen happy and with high-caliber weapons, and the Christmas tree in the background.

The firearms appear to be

an M60 machine gun, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a Thompson submachine gun

, according to Reuters.

Under US law, weapons such as machine guns are restricted to the Army, law enforcement agencies, and civilians who have obtained special licenses for weapons manufactured before May 1986.

"An insensitive jerk"

Another legislator for the same state, Democrat John Yarmuth, was quick to respond to his colleague's post, remarking that "not everyone in Kentucky is an insensitive jerk."

The image has particularly outraged victims of school shootings who advocate stricter regulation on the carrying of firearms.

One of them is Manuel Oliver, father of one of the 17 who died in another shooting that occurred at the Parkland, Florida school in 2018.

"

I don't know if they were trying to be ironic or funny or what, but it's in the worst taste," he

said in an interview with CNN.

"It is something that should teach us who we should choose and who we should not," he added.
