Bremerhaven (dpa) - The German research ships "Sonne" and "Maria S. Merian" set out from Bremerhaven towards the Arctic. Around 100 scientists are on board to replace the current staff of the icebreaker "Polarstern".

The new team had been quarantined over the past two weeks because of the corona pandemic in Bremerhaven. The "Polarstern", which left Norway last September, drifts through the Arctic for a year during the "Mosaic" expedition. For the exchange of the team, she pauses her drift for three weeks. The change with planes was originally planned, but because of the corona pandemic this would not be possible, said the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI).
