Ricard, Cristaline and Nutella remained the most popular retail products in France in 2020

Beyond drinks and breakfast references, organic products manage to find a place in the hearts of the French.

The health crisis and the confinements have not changed the main consumption habits of the French, according to the ranking of the best-selling references in 2020 carried out by the panelist NielsenIQ.

Last year, the bottle of Ricard 1L once again came out on top in terms of sales.

The limitation of the festivities because of the health crisis does not seem to have slowed down the craze for this popular alcoholic drink with anise and licorice, which, however, is recommended to be consumed in moderation.

The rest of the podium is completed by the six pack Cristaline 1.5L and Coca-Cola 1.75L, sold over the year for a respective total of 249 million and 164 million euros.

In volume, Cristaline's 6x1.5L pack outperforms other products with 241 million units sold.

It is followed by the 1.75L bottle of Coca-Cola (89 million copies) and the 1.5L bottle of Cristaline (73 million).

This success of the drinks sector, and in particular of its leading duo, Ricard and Cristaline, is part of a trend that has been going on for several years now.

As in 2018, this sector occupies the first 10 places in the ranking of references in volume and turnover.

Nutella at the top of the references excluding drinks

Among the references excluding drinks, those for breakfast are popular.

Despite criticism of its impact on health and the environment, Nutella 1kg continues to seduce the French and leads with a turnover of 96 million euros.

The spread is followed by the President 250g unsalted butter and the 375g Ferrero Rocher tin, both at 70 million euros.

The Carte Noir 2x250g coffee and the Caprice des Dieux cheese 300g came in 4th and 5th position.

In terms of the number of units sold, President butter 250g, which sold 35 million units, takes the lead this time.

It is followed by the Harris 100% bread 500g, the Galbani mozzarella 225g and the President Camembert 250g, all three sold at 25 million units in the year 2020.

Organic milk is popular

In general, the year 2020 has favored organic products.

According to the Agence Bio barometer of March 2021, 9 out of 10 French people consume them, and the majority continue to buy them in supermarkets.

Regarding the Nielsen ranking, the best-selling reference is the pack of six bottles of organic and committed 1L Lactel milk (€ 18.9 million).

It is ahead of Œufs de nos Villages, ten free-range eggs and Carapelli olive oil 750ML.

By volume, the best-selling bottle of Lactel milk was at 5.6 million units, followed by 225g Bjorg biscuits sold at 5.4 million units.

This ranking was carried out on consumer products, excluding private label, in hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and drives, until December 27, 2020.
