River and the penalties against Boca: why did Franco Armani choose to save first?

The goalkeeper contradicted a soccer law: he won the draw but gave him the chance to start kicking Russo's team.

Franco Armani won the draw prior to the penalty shootout at the Ciudad de La Plata stadium after River and Boca equalized 0 to 0 and had to define from 12 steps to seek a ticket to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores.

And contrary to what logic indicates, the archer chose to tackle first.

Boca started with the firm foot, the Millionaire's goalkeeper could not contain any of the four executions, River missed two of three and was eliminated.

Marcelo Gallardo does not give so much importance to the practice of penalties. In a press conference, the coach stated that the context of a training session is very different from that of a match. And it also appeals to the confidence that the player feels when executing it. That is why River did not have a permanent manager until Gonzalo Montiel assumed that role.

"According to how we come with the adverse streak of penalties, I always try to make the players confidently catch the ball and kick. I leave it to their discretion.

But it is not normal to err so much,

" said El Muñeco at the end of 2020 when they repeated the missed penalties. Nicolás De La Cruz had failed against Atlético Paranaense and Rafael Borré with Nacional from Uruguay. Later, Montiel took over, who became a specialist. Against Boca, River lost him due to a muscle injury. It came out at halftime.

It is curious that a technician as detailed and perfectionist as Gallardo does not give more importance to penalties. Although the "Millionaire" coach places all his trust in his team's efforts to define the series in 90 minutes, the definition from the 12 steps is always latent if that does not happen.

Of the nine times that River was faced with this situation in its cycle (very few, it is true, since it played 72 heads-up), it lost five, which is equivalent to 55 percent.

A percentage almost similar to those that River had lost in its history, before the arrival of Gallardo

.

There had been 21 defeats (and 15 victories) of 36 penalties, that is, 58%.

In penalties during the 90 minutes the statistics are not very friendly in the Gallardo cycle.

Of 71 penalties executed, River missed 20, or almost 30 percent.

After the draw at zero, Boca beat River 4-1 on penalties.

River had had a good run of penalty shootouts in July 2019. In 15 days, they beat Gimnasia de Mendoza for the Argentine Cup and Cruzeiro for the Libertadores.

In Belo Horizonte, Armani showed off

.

But from the end of that year until now, he went into a losing streak, either in the 90 minutes or when a series has to be defined and the ball is hotter.

On the other hand, definitions for penalties are also volatile.

In fact, Boca de Russo did not always celebrate that way.

Out of five definitions this year, he won three and lost two.

And in those two he was left without the chance to fight for two titles: the Professional League Cup (he fell with Racing in the semifinals) and the Libertadores Cup (he was defeated by Atlético Mineiro in the second round).

There is no reliable statistic but it has been established in the football world that those who start kicking generally win the definitions.

And from various sectors the choice of Armani was questioned.

As

Clarín was

able to find out

, it had to do with

the goalkeeper feeling confident to save a penalty and put pressure.

In fact, in three of the four executions he guessed the point but could not contain any of the shots from the Boca players, shot with great force.

Regardless of this issue, it would be unfair to fall to the goalkeeper for what he chose since not always the one who starts the series on penalties wins it.

And what happens to River with the definition from the penalty spot may be deeper than the decision in a draw.
