Road test: Opel Grandland X PHEV

The Opel Grandland X in the plug-in hybrid version offers excellent performance, extreme fuel economy and a very handsome equipment list.

But his clientele is limited to begin with and the competition from home will not make life easy for him

Exterior design more internalized than the French fireplace (Photo: Keenan Cohen)

The world of platforms, which is currently the most basic building block in the automotive industry, offers manufacturers a very large freedom to play different models on the same basis on the one hand.

And on the other hand requires from each of its variations to provide a sufficiently distinct product to justify its existence.

In the Volkswagen concern, they made a doctorate out of this, when on the same floor you will find cars such as the Seat Leon Copra, Skoda Octavia and Audi Q3.

Even in the PSA concern that has meanwhile become "Stalantis" do something similar with their cars.

In the case before us it is the Opel Grandland X based on its brother with the lion emblem Peugeot 3008 in the plug-in hybrid version.

Handsome in his conservative and solid way (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

relaxing

When they stand side by side in the importer's parking lot it's hard to believe that the 3008 and the Greenland are basically the same car.

While the lion has an extroverted and prominent design, the Opel, although a handsome vehicle, looks introverted and restrained.

Even in the cabin it continues the solid line.

The French's sophisticated battery batteries and piano switch, here replaced by a settled, traditional cabin.

Some would say it is too simplistic, but for those who do not connect to the sometimes audio-visual and exaggerated 3008 show it has a strong enough argument.

The space in front is excellent, the quality of the materials is very good (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The quality of materials and assembly are good, there are no intricacies in human engineering and it does not take a long school day to figure out which button does what and how.

Each system has its own buttons, from the multimedia, through climate control to the control of the driving aids.

The analog dashboard is also aimed at the more conservative customers who like their data in the traditional show.

At the same time, with all the desire to calm down, I would not give up a little color in the cell that would save him from his black-gray appearance.

The driver's environment is the complete opposite of the audio-visual show of the 3008, some customers have exactly what is good for them (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

But that the look will not mislead you, when it comes to armature, the list must be admitted - impressive.

Keyless opening and propulsion, wireless charging for mobile, compatibility for Apple and Android, 8-inch screen, electric trunk door, ventilation and heating for the leather seats, that of the driver is electrically adjustable and for him and the passenger, the seat base extension and more.

Full-range safety systems, adaptive cruise control with speed-limiter combination, 360-degree camera, automatic braking, lane departure correction, "dead zone" vehicle warning and more.

Easy and spacious entrance, very satisfying in the back (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The space for the rear seats is excellent, three children comfortably populated the seat for a long ride and also got their own air-conditioning outlets.

On the only charging socket they made turns.

The trunk is reduced in this version from the 514 liters of petrol and diesel models to 390 liters of borderline for full family use due to the need to locate its batteries.

On paddling and enjoyment

Like its 3008 brother, the Grandland X in the plug-in version also has two propulsion options.

The senior with 300 hp and dual propulsion with the help of two electric motors and the other with 225 hp, single electric motor and front-wheel drive.

Both use the same 1.6-liter engine, 4-cylinder turbo and a power unit that feeds on a 13.2 kWh battery. All of these accelerators run to the front wheels as mentioned through an 8-speed planetary automatic transmission.

About 6 hours of charging from a home outlet or about 4 hours from a charging station (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

After charging for about 6 hours from a home outlet or about 4 hours from a charging station, you can go out with the electric power for a ride with a performance that is definitely satisfying for a daily routine.

The manufacturer's statement of 61 km turned out to be very optimistic, we recorded 47 km in full electric mode, before the petrol engine went into operation and the Grandland X became a hybrid car.

The performance is good for a compact crossover.

It is not the power like the agility with which the electrical system imparts impetus and initial responsiveness before the gasoline engine enters its efficient range.

Detours on a mountain road are done without a problem or feeling that its 1.8 tons (an addition of about 400 kg compared to the petrol version) interfere.

Less enjoyable than the 3008 but still an impressive dynamic package for a car of its kind (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

To the praise of the Grandland X PHEV it can be said that even in places where competitors like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV feel the extra weight - ride comfort and behavior - it is definitely uncompromising.

Multi-link rear suspension, suspension calibration that combines restraint and comfort and good noise insulation makes it a vehicle that allows for comfortable distance coverage.

Even on a winding road, its chassis along with the same suspensions maintains the successful road behavior of the 3008.

At the same time, if my memory serves me right the French original was more involved in what was going on down there and certainly less of a steering wheel fighter under acceleration.

The performance is very good, whether with electric propulsion or the hybrid option (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

As usual, fuel consumption of cars of this type is a very tricky story - for customers whose daily commute amounts to short-range suburban ranges of 20-25 km in the direction and overnight charging visits to the gas station will be reserved only for long trips. But exemption with nothing is impossible, and test drive Again, not necessarily a simulation of the nature of its use, the Greenlander X recorded a 15.3km per liter socket and definitely excellent.

Summary

Just before we summarize the Grandland X PHEV, two sentences about these cars.

These are not hybrid cars and are not electric replacements.

But they have their own place and double justification - they allow the electric movement and free from fossil pollution in their short ranges and in addition, form the connecting link for people who understand that the transition to electric propulsion is inevitable and only a matter of time, but find it difficult to get used to the idea. Using such a car will be ripe to make the change and that is important.

The second issue is the issue of price and savings, in order to understand if this is the right vehicle for you you will need to place in the equation that weighs the nature of your trip, the fuel consumption in the regular version and in which the socket is charged and then understand what time.

This is at the end a subjective point that depends on the end customer and a simple calculation.

First test: Peugeot 3008 PHEV

In PSA's intra-group positioning, sorry, of Stalantis, Opel is a little below the Peugeot in the hierarchy.

In the Grandland X Plug this is not reflected in the exterior design and the less avant-garde cabin in which the (same) technology is more discreet - in my eyes it is not a disadvantage, but a matter of preference.

With an identity in the field of propulsion, these are just the gaps between the two in terms of comfort and dynamism that if you find your happiness in - the 3008 is slightly better.

But there is another gap between the two - the price of the corresponding 3008 is NIS 218,000, while the Opel is priced at NIS 205,000.

Which makes it, given the compromises mentioned for a more attractive deal.

But just before dispersal and when you think you understand everything, I'm going to ruin it for you and direct you to the nearby showroom - where the biggest challenge lies not only of Opel, but of pretty much every popular plug-in hybrid today - it's called MG EHS PHEV.

And even if it lacks the European dynamic qualities of the Opel, it offers much more performance, space, instrumentation and even electric range in the real world at NIS 159,000.

And as they say in court dramas - i rest my case
