The Romanian Ministry of Health announced that it had discovered the first two cases of the Omicron mutant in two people who had returned from South Africa late last month.
Reuters news agency quoted the ministry as saying today that the two travelers are a 48-year-old woman from Brasov province and a 59-year-old man from the eastern Vaslui province, who were isolated in their homes.
Romania has imposed a travel ban on non-EU citizens from several African countries and has sent planes to retrieve Romanians stranded by canceled flights.
The returnees are expected to be quarantined for two weeks.
The total number of injuries in Romania reached 1,785,120, and the death toll was 57,021.
