RAO Nordic Oy has been importing electricity from Russia to Finland and selling it on the Nord Pool Exchange for many years.

Unfortunately, we are forced to note that for the volumes that have been sold on the Nord Pool stock exchange since May 6, the funds have not yet been credited to our bank account,

” the company said in a press release on Friday.

Noting an “

exceptional

” situation, RAO Nordic said it was no longer “

able to make payments for electricity imported from Russia

” and added that it was “

forced to suspend the import of electricity from May 14

”.

For their part, the Finnish authorities want to be reassuring: the Nordic country's electricity supply "

is not threatened

", Fingrid said on Friday.

"

In recent times, electricity imported from Russia has covered about 10% of Finland's total consumption

," the operator said.

Its vice-president, Reima Päivinen, noted that “

the lack of electricity imports from Russia will be compensated by importing more electricity from Sweden and producing more electricity in Finland

”.

The various organizations do not specify whether this decision is linked to European sanctions weighing on the Russian economy.

But, according to Eurostat, Finland's dependence on its powerful eastern neighbor remains limited: in 2020, Russia accounted for 13.2% of Finland's electricity imports, far behind Sweden - 85.3% of the total.
