Samsung is considered a pioneer when it comes to folding smartphones. The fourth generation is said to have overcome the format's teething problems. A new Galaxy Watch and new headphones will also appear.

Samsung had been drumming up advertising for weeks, fueling the rumor mill.

On Wednesday, the group presented four new products at an event entitled "Galaxy Unpacked 2022".

In addition to foldable smartphones, a new generation of smartwatches and buds was presented.

Samsung has had serious problems with its folding smartphones in the past: Both the first and second generations of the Galaxy Fold were very sensitive, and buyers complained about cracked or broken displays.

With the now presented fourth edition of the folding smartphone, such weaknesses should finally be a thing of the past.

Thanks to a robust aluminum frame and more resistant Gorilla Glass, the new smartphones should be able to cope with all everyday requirements.

Foldable workhorse

Samsung has two different models on offer: When opened, the Galaxy Z Fold4 basically doubles the display area you are used to from smartphones.

The group therefore praises the smartphone as a mobile replacement for a work PC.

Thanks to cooperation with Google and Microsoft, multitasking should work particularly well, so that the owners can seamlessly copy information from Outlook into the pre-installed spreadsheet.

The new device has four different cameras and is powered by a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor.

The performance has its price: On the one hand, the Galaxy Z Fold4 weighs a whopping 263 grams.

In addition, the highest equipment class with 12 gigabytes of RAM and one terabyte of memory is significantly more expensive than the predecessor at over 2150 euros.

The Galaxy Z Flip4 follows the opposite path: A standard 6.7-inch display can be folded up here, making the smartphone particularly slim in your pocket.

Instead of business customers, the smaller device is aimed at the Instagram generation: videos or group selfies should be as easy as possible via the “FlexCam mode”.

Samsung has worked with Meta to adapt the new smartphone to its Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook apps.

Among other things, Samsung wants to attract the young target group with extensive personalization options.

Assuming sales success

So that you don't have to open the smartphone all the time, Samsung has upgraded the front display with its 1.9-inch diagonal: You can use the "cover screen" to make calls, reply to text messages or even control your smart home.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 should cost between 1099 euros and 1279 euros.

Samsung has high hopes for its new generation of foldable phones.

As the company told the dpa news agency, the group wants to sell half a million such devices this year in Germany alone.

Last year there were 180,000 pieces.

However, Samsung has left its competitors like Huawei behind in this segment.

The group also has a suitable announcement for fans of smartwatches.

The Galaxy Watch is entering its fifth round and brings with it a new top model: the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro.

Samsung's BioActive sensor is used here again, which is supposed to deliver readings on heart rate, blood oxygen content and stress level.

In addition, blood pressure can be measured and EKGs can be taken - but only in markets where these medical functions have been activated.

A new feature is a 13 percent larger battery compared to the Galaxy Watch 4. At the same time, Samsung has increased the contact area of the sensor on the wrist, which means that the measurement results are now more accurate than the previous model.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro is said to have a higher quality finish than the base model and is therefore better suited for outdoor sports enthusiasts.

Depending on the equipment, the Galaxy Watch5 should cost between 299 euros and 379 euros, the Pro model between 469 euros and 519 euros.

As the fourth new gadget, Samsung presented another generation of its headphones on Wednesday: the Galaxy Buds2 Pro.

They are said to be 15 percent more compact than their predecessors and so stay in the ear better.

Samsung is thus targeting athletes on the one hand, but also couch potatoes: thanks to “Auto Switch”, the buds should also play the sound from Samsung televisions in the ear without any problems, thus relieving the nerves of roommates.

However, this only works with the latest generation of televisions if they also have the latest firmware on board.
