The transaction brought in more than $ 285 million in cash: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sold around half of his nearly 1.7 million shares in the tech company last week.

Overall, the 54-year-old manager separated from almost 840,000 dead within two days, according to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

According to insiders, the Nadellas was the largest single-stock sale to date.

It is unclear what exactly is behind the sale.

A Microsoft spokesman said, according to the Wall Street Journal, that Nadella had sold the shares “for reasons of personal financial planning and diversification”.

"He is committed to the continued success of the company, and his holdings well exceed the stock ownership requirements set by Microsoft's board of directors."

Is there a new tax on stock profits behind it?

The sale may also have something to do with the fact that Nadella will soon have to pay taxes on a large scale.

Observers suspect he will need the money to pay the taxes that may soon become due on long-term investment income.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has therefore also been selling shares in his company on a large scale for weeks.

He's already sold billions of dollars worth of paper.

Up to now, a system was common in the USA, according to which exchange rate gains are only taxed when the profit is realized.

However, this practice is considered one reason why US corporations like to buy back their own shares - and thus support the price - instead of paying out the money as dividends.

Nadella has been with Microsoft since 1992 - and after taking over the executive position in 2014, she made the software group one of the most valuable companies in the world.

The Indian-born manager made the tech company the leading cloud provider for companies and was able to expand its business even during the corona pandemic.

Microsoft currently has a market capitalization of $ 2.53 trillion.

It was not until June that Nadella was also appointed chairman of the board of directors of Microsoft, giving her even more decision-making power.
