The season has barely started, and the electric scooters are already at the top of the annoyance list in the larger cities. The municipalities find clear words.

The cities are demanding that rental companies take care of abandoned, often scrap-ripe electric scooters in parks or bodies of water. "Anyone who earns money with scooters is also responsible for the consequences," said the chief executive of the German Association of Cities, Helmut Dedy. "If users throw e-scooters into rivers or hide them in the bushes, the companies have to be responsible for the recovery and disposal."

"E-scooters that have been parked at random or overturned somewhere on the sidewalk or public place are causing trouble," Dedy said.

He pointed out that most providers had already agreed key points for trouble-free operation with the German Association of Cities in 2019.

The cities have also clearly regulated with the rental companies in which areas e-scooters can be driven and parked and where not.

E-scooters have been on the road in Germany for two years.

For this purpose, an ordinance that has been in force since June 15, 2019 lays down technical requirements and rules of conduct.

The vehicles are allowed to travel between 6 and 20 kilometers per hour.

You have to ride on cycle paths - there are none on the road.

Rental companies offer e-scooters in several cities.
