Six houses west of Utrecht were so badly damaged that they are temporarily no longer habitable, as the Dutch news agency ANP reported on Saturday.

Nine people were injured as a result of the storm, which hit a local area on Friday.

Thousands of trees fell over in the region of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park - some of them were more than 150 years old.

"Whole pieces of forest were flattened," said a spokesman for the forest administration.

Because trees could still fall and branches could break, the area was closed to visitors.

According to the forest administration, the storm was most violent in an area about three kilometers wide and five kilometers long north of the village of Leersum.
