Shlomo Artzi talks about the low point in his career, "Meeting with Roni Koben" (here 11)
In one of Shlomo Artzi's ultimate songs, "Fields of Engagements," he sings to the recipient some of the most beautiful words he has written: "I am a gun full of longing," he sings to her, and immediately concludes, in despair: "Every song is an inevitable memory." It's an almost violent image: the longings are shot, wounded, unstoppable, and the ammunition far from finished.
These lines come up again and again when watching Roni Koben's interview with Artzi as part of "Meeting", which aired last night here 11. Artzi is not interviewed on TV - or at all - too often, although maybe this year it may change, in the background of a documentary series about him that will air later This year is hot.
It was not a particularly exciting, surprising, or revealing interview. Nor did the conversation between the two renew too much informatively, or did it emerge from some sharp position on any subject in the world. Even the songs were hardly talked about there. Artzi himself, whose words twist spontaneously in answers to questions and not just in songs,Examine them carefully, and reveal a deep sadness.

Artzi, a great Israeli singer, is revealed as an anxious, lonely, scarred man who "kills emotions" as he puts it, belittles himself and denies his success, and behind his engines hides immense pain, childhood traumas and heavy shadow of kilns from Europe.
So true - it was always there in the songs (in my country men are always dancing and crying so as not to get lost through this or that balcony), and this time it overflowed.
The loaded gun fired.
Artzi is already at a stage where he can enjoy the great love of the audience, blabber on about glory, make great statements and get in on anyone he pleases.
But in this rare interview he preferred to bring to light his vulnerability and the painful reality of the time that has passed and the people who have passed with him.
30 and 40 years ago, Artzi presented an alternative to Israeli machoism.
It is not the same room, and it is not the same country, but within the forceful and arrogant culture that flourishes in this time and place, this sincerity is like breathable air.
