The share of organic farms in Germany has increased significantly over the past ten years.
Wiesbaden (dpa) - The number of organic farmers in Germany has increased significantly in recent years.
Last year, according to the Federal Statistical Office, almost 26,100 farms operated in accordance with the rules of organic farming.
According to the Wiesbaden authority on Friday, that was 58 percent more than in 2010 (16,500 organic farms).
The share of organic farms in agricultural holdings in Germany increased from six percent to ten percent.
More than half of all organic farms are located in the two federal states of Bavaria (38 percent) and Baden-Württemberg (17 percent).
In 2020, the total number of farms in Germany was 262,800, although there has been a trend towards larger units for years.
According to the information, an area of around 1.6 million hectares is now cultivated organically.
That is 69 percent more than in 2010 (941,500 hectares).
Measured against the total agricultural area, this is a share of 9.6 percent.
