Biles did not compete in the four individual finals of the Tokyo Olympics, the individual jumping contest, uneven bars and floor exercise, after retiring during the women's team final, citing mental health problems.

He did return for the balance beam final, in which he hung his second bronze medal in the discipline after his third place at the 2016 Rio Games.

"It's not at all how I imagined or dreamed my second Olympics would be, but I feel blessed to represent the United States," Biles wrote.

"I will forever remember this unique Olympic experience. Thank you all for the endless love and support. I am truly grateful."

His silver medal in the team event and bronze on the balance beam mean that Biles has now reached seven Olympic medals in his career.

He also added: "Leaving Tokyo with 2 more Olympic medals to add to my collection, not bad at all!"
