Storks, buzzards, vultures ... Hundreds of birds electrocuted between 2018 and 2020: the Barcelona prosecutor's office has launched proceedings against the Spanish energy giant Endesa after the death of hundreds of birds because of its high voltage lines .

It would be a

"death trap"

and a

"real scourge"

for birds, according to a report from the prosecution consulted by AFP: Endesa is thus accused of

"crime against natural resources and the environment"

for not having sufficiently insulated its electric cables and pylons.

A total of 255 birds died between 2018 and 2020 in the Osona region, north of Barcelona, in northeastern Spain, including protected species like white storks, griffon vultures and buzzards, points to the document drafted by the prosecution.

"The electrocution and death of birds due to direct contact with the exposed conductors of the pylons belonging to the company pursued affected the entire province of Barcelona, constituting a real scourge known to those responsible"

, we can read in the document.

A source from Endesa, a subsidiary of Italian energy giant Enel, told AFP that the company had acted

"in full compliance with the law"

.

According to experts, electrocution on power lines is a major threat to many wild birds, especially endangered species that use pylons as perches.

According to the prosecution, Endesa had

"not taken measures to repair the affected media that do not comply with security measures (...) deliberately ignoring its legal obligations to prevent damage to wildlife and the environment "

.

In August 2018, 72 white storks died in three days when a group of 700 birds, migrating south, stopped in the region, landing on 34 pylons of Endesa

"which had not been brought up to standard and isolated by the company, ”

as it was legally required to do, the report said.
