After a speeding accident with two seriously injured women, the defendant was sentenced to three years and ten months in prison.
The Berlin district court found the 29-year-old guilty of serious and dangerous bodily harm and of fleeing the accident.
In the accident on the evening of August 31, 2020 on Kurfürstendamm, a mother and her daughter were seriously injured in their small car.
The 17-year-old daughter was a joint plaintiff in the trial, and her mother has been paralyzed since the accident.
The public prosecutor's office had accused the man of driving a 530 hp rental vehicle along Ku'damm at up to 132 kilometers per hour and not braking the car even when the women's car tried to cross the street.
Parked cars were damaged by flying debris
The defendant had confessed extensively.
At the beginning of the trial a month ago, he said he had accelerated to impress his co-driver.
He was aware that he could endanger other road users by maximum acceleration.
He wanted to pay the two victims a total of 20,000 euros.
The confession was preceded by a so-called agreement between the court, public prosecutor and defense.
For this reason, the criminal offenses that had previously been accused of escaping by accident and dangerous interference with road traffic were no longer negotiated.
According to local media reports, the parties agreed on a maximum sentence of four years.
Without this agreement, it could have been significantly higher under certain circumstances.
The force of the collision was so strong that several parked vehicles were damaged by flying car parts, it said.
The defendant fled after the accident, was arrested a month later and has been in prison ever since.
Illegal street races have been considered a criminal offense in Germany since 2017 and no longer an administrative offense.
According to the penal code, this is punishable by a fine or up to two years in prison - and up to ten years if someone is seriously injured or killed.
