Start of school in Hamburg without air filters and vaccinations: it will go wrong

2021-08-04T17:55:42.265Z

257,000 children will return to schools in Hamburg on Thursday. The authority has ordered air filters, but they haven't arrived yet. A headmistress is relaxed, parents' representatives and a pediatrician tend not to.

Oh, it's not even

here.

Yes, you see a secondary school class here.

There are 23 children in the class ...

Tour of the district school in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, one day before the end of the summer vacation.

Here you can see the teachers of the upper level preparing for the lesson and the situation as they will be teaching tomorrow.

«

Hamburg is the third state to start the new school year, and in some classes small greetings are already waiting for the schoolchildren.

257,000 students will be taught face-to-face from August 5th, possibly shortly before the fourth corona wave.

The much discussed vaccination offer for children and adolescents aged 12 and over comes too late, at least for Hamburg.

Annette Lingenauber, specialist in pediatric and adolescent medicine

»

Well, we are expecting an increase in infections, and we are already looking forward to this with mixed feelings.

We do not know exactly what was changed in the schools when the school started a year ago.

«

The distance markings from 2020 in Wilhelmsburg are no longer used, but the hygiene rules have not fundamentally changed here.

The "safety concept" is still based on distance, masks, compulsory testing and ventilation.

Katja Schlünzen, headmistress of the Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg district school

All classrooms have a CO2 measuring device.

Green means optimal, optimal area, then it slowly goes to orange and dark red.

At Orange, the colleagues are starting to ventilate.

«

The ventilation is to be supplemented by mobile air filters in Hamburg, and the city has ordered 10,000 devices for the schools.

However, they have not yet been delivered.

The classrooms should be equipped by the beginning of October at the latest - for Ines Moegling from the Parents' Chamber, it all comes too late.

I am a little skeptical because the market is quickly emptied for many things.

We also had that at times when a mask was required, where the Plexi walls should be used, etc. So I think it's really very sporty to put 10,000 pieces of equipment in the classrooms in the two months.

«

In Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, too, there is no air purifier in any of the classrooms.

Headmistress Schlünzen is not worried about that.

Katja Schlünzen, headmistress of the Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg district school

We are very relaxed because we are in a district where we had very high infection rates in the first and second waves, and we simply experienced that we were with The regular ventilation, the cohort division, the strict mask requirement, but also the fact that we children who showed symptoms of illness were quickly sent home, so that we actually had it under control.

We are happy that the air filters are coming.

You did that nicely with the little blackboards….

«

The headmistress is much more concerned with something different than the air purifiers: the risk that the schoolchildren will have to go to alternate classes again, with cramped living conditions and parents who cannot take good care of their children in hybrid classes.

school

For our children, the school is the place where learning takes place, where social relationships and experiences take place, and where there is an exchange with classmates.

And that is very, very important for a child in the development of personality.

«

The parents' representatives basically see it the same way, but at the same time reminds of Plan B.

Ines Moegling, Hamburg Parents' Chamber

»

Politicians want to keep face-to-face lessons on" Deubel come out ". My assumption is that we will deal with hybrid and alternating lessons again in the fall. [...] What the Senate has to do: If we go earlier or later go to hybrid alternating classes or if students have to be in quarantine forcibly, that the distance classes that are then inevitably applied are of a quality comparable to what takes place in face-to-face classes.

"

The price of classroom teaching could be more infections among school children.

This could be prevented by herd immunity - Annette Lingenauber believes that vaccination of children and adolescents is currently the main topic of discussion in this context.

»

And there we have a large group of adults between 18 and 59 who have not even been vaccinated.

And we even have unvaccinated people in the over 60s.

And that is the first starting point for us that we vaccinate this group very specifically.

«

"

Does that upset you?"

"

Yes. That makes you feel good, in the daily discussion with parents who might not want to be vaccinated, you can tell that it is difficult to argue.
