State electoral committee determines the result of the election in Berlin

Usually the announcement of final election results by the relevant committees is more of a formality.

In Berlin, however, it could be exciting after the election failures on September 26th.

Berlin - The Berlin state electoral committee will determine the final result of the elections for the House of Representatives and the district councils on September 26th on Thursday (10:00 a.m.). It should also be a question of whether the balloting has to be repeated in individual of the 78 constituencies or in one or the other electoral district due to election mishaps or organizational deficiencies. The committee cannot rule on this. But state election officer Petra Michaels is likely to comment on whether she wants to partially contest the election or not.

A challenge is only possible at the Berlin Constitutional Court.

He will then decide whether an election result will be declared invalid.

An important prerequisite for this is that mishaps or errors have affected the distribution of mandates.

The fact that this will be the case across the board in Berlin on September 26th was denied by the Senate after evaluating the reports of the election officers from the twelve districts.

However, a few days ago, Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) did not rule out that this could have happened in individual cases.

Decision on dispute over polling postal voters

The legal dispute between Federal Returning Officer Georg Thiel and the polling institute Forsa over the so-called Sunday question continues.

The Hessian Administrative Court (VGH) in Kassel announced on Monday, upon request, a decision for the middle of this week.

The Wiesbaden Administrative Court had previously ruled in favor of Forsa, but the Federal Returning Officer lodged a complaint with the VGH.

Three elections, one referendum, five ballot papers, six crosses - the organizers in Berlin probably underestimated the amount of time that some of the voters needed to cast their votes.

The result: long waiting times.

The error analysis is not much faster either.

In the elections to the Bundestag, the House of Representatives and the district council meetings on September 26th, numerous breakdowns and organizational deficiencies came to light in Berlin.

In some places, ballot papers were missing, while in other polling stations the wrong ones arrived at first.

Queues in front of polling stations formed throughout the day, which is why in many cases voters cast their votes after 6 p.m.

All of this had put Berlin in a bad light nationwide.

As a consequence, state returning officer Michaelis had offered to resign and was recalled by the Senate at the end of October 14th.

So she has her last working day in this role on Thursday.
