Stop aging?

Researchers from Israel have taken a step in that direction

A groundbreaking study by researchers from Tel Aviv University and Shamir Medical Center has managed in just three months to do what exercise and proper nutrition will probably not be able to do for years - slow down cell aging

Along with the fight against the corona virus, cancer, Alzheimer's and other serious chronic diseases, there has been a worldwide run for quite a few years of researchers trying to find a treatment that will stop aging.

Now, the world's first clinical trial of its kind in humans conducted by Tel Aviv University and Shamir Hospital (Assaf Harofeh) states that treating the stress cell of healthy people in old age, can stop the aging of blood cells.

The researchers found that a series of stress cell therapies can reverse two major processes known to be associated with the aging process and the diseases that characterize it: telomere shortening - protective regions located at both ends of each chromosome (chromosomes contain the genetic material in the nucleus), Called Senescent cells.

The study was conducted as part of a comprehensive Israeli research program that deals with aging as a reversible and treatable disease.

The article was published in the scientific journal Aging in November 2020.

"We have been researching and treating hyperbaric therapy for many years - treating unique protocols of high pressure oxygen inside a pressure cell with varying concentrations. Over time we have recorded achievements in various fields, such as improving brain function damaged by age or brain damage from factors such as stroke and head injuries." Prof. Shai Efrati from the Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Purple School of Neuroscience at Tel Aviv University, the founder and director of the Purple Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh), conducted the study alongside Dr. Amir Hadani, Medical Research Director at the Purple Medical Center. Hyperbaric and research at Shamir Medical Center (Assaf Harofeh).

In the present study, the two sought to examine the effect of treatment on healthy and independent people in old age, through questions such as whether stress cell therapy can slow down, stop, and perhaps even reverse the normal aging process at the cellular level?

The study exposed 35 healthy people aged 64 and over to a series of 60 hyperbaric therapies over 90 days.

The researchers took blood samples from the participants before, during, at the end and after the series of treatments, performed a variety of blood cells from the immune system (cells that have DNA), and compared the findings at the four dates.

The findings indicated that the treatments were able to reverse the aging process in two critical aspects - the telomeres at the ends of the chromosomes that elongated instead of shortening, at a rate ranging from 20-38 percent in different cell types and the rate of dysfunctional old cells, in the whole blood cell population decreased significantly. 11 to 37 percent by cell type.

Telomere shortening is now considered the 'holy grail' of the biology of aging, and researchers around the world are trying to develop drug and environmental therapies that will lengthen telomeres.

"To date, we have seen that lifestyle changes and intense exercise can somewhat delay telomere shortening. But our hyperbaric therapy has managed, in just three months, to prolong telomeres far beyond any known intervention involving lifestyle changes," concluded Dr. Hadani.
