Study: From 2035, more than half of all new trucks will be electric
From as early as 2030, battery-electric and fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles will be cheaper to operate than diesel-powered vehicles - this is the result of the study "Preparing the world for zero-emission trucks", which was carried out by the management consultancy McKinsey.
According to the experts, the total operating costs are the most important criterion when selecting a commercial vehicle.
Biofuels or e-fuels could also be used in certain niche applications - despite the higher costs.

However, it will be a long time before combustion trucks disappear from everyday traffic: according to McKinsey, 9 out of 10 trucks will still be conventionally powered in 2030 - and even in 2040, 6 out of 10 will still be powered The study cites a survey of more than 400 fleet operators, in which more than 60 percent said they had announced specific decarbonization targets.
In the survey, however, there were still some concerns about the introduction of battery-powered trucks: a third of those surveyed cited the limited battery life as an obstacle (trucks have longer usage times than cars) - and then there were the usual criticisms of e-mobility: long charging times and limited ranges.
