In addition, according to the UN, 166,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged by the torrential rains that have ravaged the country since mid-July.

More than half of those affected by the floods are in five of Sudan's 18 states: Khartoum, North Darfur, West Darfur, Blue Nile and Sennar.

According to the Sudanese Civil Defense, 124 people have died and 54 others were injured in the floods. Sudan called on the international community in mid-September to provide more aid to deal with the consequences of the floods which forced Khartoum to declare a state of emergency. Torrential rains increase disease risks and hamper efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations says.
