Sunflower oil has been in high demand since the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

British takeaways are sorely lacking in oil to sizzle.

London - Passers-by like to catch the strong smell of frying oil as they pass small snack bars, and hungry pedestrians immediately have images of crispy breading or crispy fries in their heads - their stomachs growl.

But that could soon be over, at least in Great Britain.

On the island, the national dish, fish and chips, is under threat because of "apocalyptic" food prices, the Bank of England has predicted.

Flour, sunflower oil, potatoes and fish are needed for the delicious snack.

Except for the fish, all ingredients that German takeaways also urgently need.

Oil shelves in supermarkets are often empty

Some compared sunflower oil in this country with toilet paper during the corona pandemic.

In the supermarket, customers stand in front of empty shelves, but when they do buy oil, incredulity dominates.

In a Lidl branch there was even a tangible argument about the liquid gold.

Up to now, the British fish and chip shops got half their oil from Russia or Ukraine.

The same goes for the flour for the breading.

Since the beginning of the war, both products have become significantly more expensive.

In Great Britain, food prices rose by 5.9 percent, and experts expect inflation to continue.

And if the shortage of flour and oil wasn't enough for British takeaways, things could soon get tight for potatoes too.

The reason for this: more expensive Russian fertilizers.

In addition to sunflower oil, there is another concern: high energy prices

In addition to the food shortages, snack bar operators are also faced with rising energy prices.

In addition, of course, they have to fear for their customers, who in future will probably weigh up whether they should treat themselves to a portion of fish and chips or rather pay the heating bill.

It is true that there are not yet such dark forecasts for Germany as for the British.

Nevertheless, Economics Minister Habeck emphasized in April that the war will “cost us prosperity”.

Flour, potatoes and sunflower oil are also needed in every German snack bar for deep-frying fries and for the delicious golden-yellow crunchy breading.
