How the virus got into the Meißen district - about 60 kilometers outside of the previously existing restricted zones - is currently being investigated.

"We are currently assuming that it is not a matter of transmission by migrating wild boars from the infected areas in the Görlitz district," said the head of the ASP crisis team, Sebastian Vogel.

There are a total of 549 confirmed cases of African swine fever in Saxony.

ASF is harmless to humans, but not to domestic pigs.
