Many Germans want to help the war-torn Ukrainians and take refugees privately into their homes.

Insurance companies are often accommodating in this case.

Anyone who takes refugees from Ukraine into their home should also keep an eye on their insurance coverage in order to avoid unnecessary costs.

Tenants are liable to their landlord for any damage caused by their guests.

But owners may also have to bear their own costs if important insurance, such as liability insurance, is missing.

To protect themselves, helpers should contact their insurance company.

Taking in refugees: It is often possible to extend the insurance cover free of charge

A call to the insurance company can be really worthwhile for refugee helpers, because

the providers often extend existing insurance policies for refugees free of charge

.

The NRW consumer advice center points this out.

Refugees can therefore often be insured free of charge and, if the worst comes to the worst, receive the agreed insurance cover.

Especially with these insurances, it is worthwhile for helpers to follow up:

  • Personal Liability Insurance

    :

    The

The scope of insurance can be extended to the refugees who have been admitted.

Many municipalities also offer so-called collective insurance, under which all refugees who have arrived are insured at a flat rate.

  • Legal protection insurance:

Free initial consultation for helpers and refugees possible.

  • Household insurance:

Typical everyday and household items belonging to the refugees are included in the insurance cover as third-party property, as is newly purchased clothing.

However, the sum insured may then have to be increased.

  • Residential building insurance:

According to the consumer advice center, there is no reason to extend the insurance cover.

  • Motor vehicle liability insurance:

German motor vehicle liability insurers will provisionally cover all damage caused by a Ukrainian car in Germany until May 31, 2022.

“In the event of an accident, the minimum sum insured applies to the injured party.

This is EUR 7.5 million for personal injury, EUR 1.22 million for property damage and EUR 50,000 for financial loss.

In the event of an accident, those affected simply contact the German Green Card Office.

  • Pet owner liability insurance :

Pets brought from the Ukraine can also be insured.

The consumer advice center advises actively asking the insurance companies about the relevant conditions and having them

confirmed in writing

.

In some cases, the insurance cover is even adjusted automatically.

By the way, many insurance policies are tax deductible as income-related expenses.
