(CNN) --

Tennis player Nick Kyrgios is due in court next month in Canberra, Australia's capital, after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend late last year, Australian media reports.

Asked about the allegation on Tuesday, Australian police told CNN in a statement: "Australian Capital Territory Police can confirm that a 27-year-old man from Watson (in Canberra) is scheduled to face the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates court on August 2 in relation to a charge of ordinary assault following an incident in December 2021."

Lawyer Jason Moffett, who is reportedly representing Kyrgios, told The Canberra Times, who was first to report the news, that he had been briefed on the matter, which was "in the context of a domestic relationship".

Moffett said his client is aware of the allegation.

CNN has reached out to Moffett for comment.

"The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously," Moffett told The Canberra Times.

"Since the matter is in court ... he has no comment at this time, but we will eventually issue a statement to the media," Moffett added.

Kyrgios, who will face Chile's Cristian Garin on Wednesday at Wimbledon, reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal in seven years.

CNN has also contacted Wimbledon to find out if these allegations will affect their participation in the tournament.
