Paris City Hall announces that there will be at least as many pedestrianized streets to make way for terraces as last summer.

The earths grow.

At least a hundred streets in Paris could again be pedestrianized to accommodate ephemeral terraces this summer, as in summer 2020, on the basis of projects submitted by traders, the Paris town hall said on Friday.

Files to be submitted as of May 15

Last summer, after the first wave of Covid-19, around a hundred streets were closed to traffic for an evening, a weekend or the whole week, after acceptance of a large majority of files. "

We can say to ourselves that at the very least, we are going back to something more or less similar,

" Olivia Polski, trade assistant to mayor PS Anne Hidalgo, told AFP.

As of this weekend, the Parisian bars and restaurants, authorized to reopen their terraces on May 19 as everywhere in France, will be able to submit their file which could lead to the summer, the time that the services of the City instruct them, specified the socialist deputy. Traders will also have to obtain the approval of the police headquarters, firefighters and district mayors "

so that residents are not penalized

", emphasizes Olivia Polski, who excludes closing to traffic a lane used by a bus .

The fact that traders are at the initiative of projects, "

as close as possible to the reality

" of their neighborhood, should make it possible to limit nuisances and abuses, believes Olivia Polski, who will let the district mayors judge a posteriori.

Where there will be problems, we will no longer authorize.

A device that comes in addition to the terrace extensions

This exceptional device is independent of the consultation in progress on the extensions of terraces allowed since the first confinement, which should lead to the definition of a new regulation of displays and terraces (RET). This will be submitted to the Paris Council for a vote in early July and gradually applied instead of the simple declarative regime in force until June 30, explains Olivia Polski. It is within this new regulatory framework that these terrace extensions can be made permanent, in particular on parking spaces, and subject to a terrace fee, a sensitive subject for the Parisian executive.

We have made an exemption since March 2020, both on the terraces and on the terrace extensions, which goes until the end of June, ie 16 months in all,

” recalls Olivia Polski. “

As soon as these parking spaces were not in the regulations, if we want to perpetuate them, we must set a price for these spaces.

“Faced with the beginning of controversy over the end of these exemptions for a sector hard hit by the crisis, Anne Hidalgo announced the extension of exemptions until the end of September. The traders "

will not have to pay, nothing, until the end of the summer, neither the terraces, nor the extensions

", confirms his assistant.
