Beaches (Pages)

Tomorrow (Friday) there will be a project "Cleaning the largest sea in the world" in Israel (13: 00-09: 00), which will go through about 80 points along the shores of Israel. Thousands of volunteers, environmental activists and good citizens have set out to clean up the dirty shores of our country, in an attempt to raise awareness of our plight.

The volunteers went to the beaches from Rosh Hanikra in the north to Ashkelon in the south (including the beaches of Eilat and the Sea of Galilee) in order to emphasize to decision makers the importance of preserving the sea, establishing marine reserves, and preventing climate crisis damage.

The previous event, which took place about a year ago, was attended by about 18,000 people who collected over 62 tons of garbage. The most common type was various smoking products followed by corks, cardboard and styrofoam packaging, plates and cutlery, hygiene products, non-deposit beverage bottles, building materials, fishing products and toys.

Data from the "Clean Beach" index from the previous month show that 89% of the beaches measured were rated "clean" to "very clean", compared to 86% in the previous index.

In the same period last year only 70% of the beaches were found to be clean to very clean.

The percentage of clean beaches since the beginning of 2021 stands at 72.7%.

So let's take an important part in cleaning our country, and it's time to get to know even the dirtiest beaches in Israel right now so you can come and improve their condition.

According to various estimates, about 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the seas and oceans each year.

A national monitoring report of marine waste for 2019, conducted by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Institute for Marine and Lake Research, found that about 70% of marine waste consists of bags and plastic packaging, and in the last two years many face masks have been added to coastal and marine waste.

The sea also plays an important role in maintaining a stable climate, but the sea's ability to balance the climate is in jeopardy in the face of global changes.

The eastern Mediterranean is warming at an accelerated pace due to climate change - and global warming and its temperature have risen by about 3 degrees in recent decades.

This change affects some Mediterranean species.

Conservation of nature at sea, through nature reserves, allows marine nature to continue to thrive, be more resilient to climate change, and even help mitigate climate change through the absorption of carbon dioxide.
