Four years after arriving in France, Costco is finally taking second.
The American distributor, the second in the world by turnover, landed in France in 2017 with a store in Villebon-sur-Yvette (Essonne).
It is preparing to open a second “warehouse club”, as the distributor calls its stores, in mid-November in Pontault-Combault (Seine-et-Marne).
In 2017, the distributor aimed to operate fifteen stores in France by 2027, and two stores by the end of 2017. Its projects were slow to be completed, due to a lack of available spaces.
Costco is looking for premises of at least 12,000 m2, the equivalent of a hypermarket.
“
We first wanted to have two stores in the Paris region, then to expand elsewhere
,” explains Gary Swindells, the distributor's CEO in France.
But we worked for a long time on a project that ultimately failed, before finding this location in Pontault-Combault.
He will set up his pallets there in the premises of a former Leclerc.
