The Anti-Narcotics Department arrested 6 people on charges of excavating antiquities in the Shaghour neighborhood of Damascus and confiscated antique coins in their possession.
The Ministry of Interior stated, in a statement that SANA received a copy of today, that through information received by the Drug Enforcement Administration about a group of people excavating antiquities in one of the cellars of old houses in Al-Shaghour, Damascus, and offering antique coins for sale, a person and his sister were arrested while they were showing a sample of those pieces.
The ministry added that in light of the arrests, the rest of the group members were stopped while they were riding in a private Toyota Corolla car, in which coins were found hidden in a bag containing 501 coins that were seized.
The ministry pointed out that by investigating the house belonging to one of the group members, a staircase covered with curtains was found, and at the end of it a hand-dug tunnel, and by checking, a wooden door was found completely covered and camouflaged with a cloth. confiscated.
The ministry confirmed that by interrogating the arrested, the two brothers confessed to practicing witchcraft and sorcery for several years, and that they had agreed with the rest of the group to sell the antique coins for two and a half million Syrian pounds per piece.
The ministry indicated that the confiscated artifacts were duly handed over to the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums and that those arrested would be brought to the competent judiciary to receive their just punishment.
