Kuala Lumpur-SANA
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the final round of the 2022 World Cup Asian qualifiers.
The AFC said in a statement on its official website that it will continue to work on setting new standards for Asian arbitration, stressing that Asia will be the first continent to use video technology in the qualifiers.
The Federation added that the “VAR” technology will also be used in the AFC Cup final, and will be implemented starting from the quarter-finals of the Champions League, which is the same stage through which the technology began to be applied in last season’s competitions.
And the “VAR” technology is based on reviewing the decisions made by the match referee using video clips and a headset to communicate with the assistant referee when necessary, and work began on it for the first time in Asia through the last edition of the Asian Nations Cup, which was held in the UAE in 2019, starting from the quarter-finals.
