Dandruff hair can ruin your day, even if it's not something other people can see. That dryness, flaking and itchiness is | CNNE Underscored | CNN

Dandruff hair can ruin your day, even if it's not something other people can see.

That dryness, flaking, and itchiness is most commonly caused by seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that is due to an overgrowth of certain yeasts.

"This is a harmless yeast that lives in us, but due to a person's body chemistry, it can overgrow on the scalp, ears, eyebrows or nose," says Los Angeles-based dermatologist Jessica Wu .

"When there is an overgrowth of yeast, your body develops an inflammatory response that creates itchiness, scaling or redness."

However, this is not the only cause of dandruff.

Those symptoms can also be due to product build-up, allergic reactions, seasonality, or medical conditions like psoriasis.

A common misconception with dandruff is to believe that it is due to dry hair, but that is not the case.

Wu explains that with seborrheic dermatitis, yeast feeds on the oils that we all produce, causing overproduction that leads to dandruff.

She sees many patients who think their scalp is dry, so they use more oil when they should do otherwise.

The oil works in the short term to mask the flaking, but the symptoms return because the yeast eats the oils.

"We often see this in people with oilier hair or who don't wash their hair as often," he says.

How to treat dandruff

According to Dr. Sumayah Jamal, a board certified dermatologist at the Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York City, removing oils from your routine isn't necessarily the answer either.

"There are a lot of strategies to keep the moisture in the hair while controlling the growth of these yeasts," he explains.

The texture and quality of your hair, along with your care routine, determine what type of treatment might work best.

However, it is important to remember that dandruff is not something we can completely get rid of.

"Because it is linked to the yeast which is part of our natural skin flora, we cannot get rid of it," he says.

"Some people have very mild dandruff with intermittent more serious episodes, but other people require ongoing treatment."

Both Jamal and Wu recommend trying dandruff shampoos first to treat your symptoms.

Ingredients like pythion zinc and ketoconazole are effective in killing these yeasts, and common in many shampoo treatments.

If you have dry or thick hair, be sure to look for a shampoo that doesn't remove too much moisture.

As Wu says, today our hair care is more important than ever to help us feel more confident, considering that we normally cover most of our faces with masks, and we have to agree.

If you're looking for the best shampoos for dandruff and to enhance your hair care, take a look at our top-rated picks below.

The best general dandruff shampoo

Nizoral AD Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($ 14.84, originally $ 17.17;

amazon.com

)

If you go to a dermatologist for dandruff treatment, they will likely tell you to try this shampoo.

In fact, this was recommended by our two experts because it is the over-the-counter version of what doctors recommend for patients with more severe cases.

Nizoral contains 1% of the active ingredient ketoconazole to help prevent dandruff breakouts (the recipe is typically 2%).

Nearly 17,000 reviewers on Amazon are impressed with its ability to treat symptoms after just a few uses and at a fairly affordable cost.

The best dandruff shampoo for inflammation

Neutrogena T / Gel Therapeutic Shampoo ($ 4.95, originally $ 7.59;

amazon.com

)

This Neutrogena T / Gel Shampoo lives up to its name by providing therapeutic relief from itching and flaking.

According to Jamal, it is known to reduce inflammation because it contains coal tar extract.

It's gentle but formulated to keep working even after you rinse it off.

Beyond dandruff, it also works well for people with scalp psoriasis and more severe seborrheic dermatitis.

Critics aren't huge fans of the scent, but they think it's worth it for the exceptional results.

The best 2-in-1 dandruff shampoo

Harry's 2-in-1

Anti-Dandruff

Shampoo and Conditioner ($ 7;

harrys.com

)

This new 2-in-1 from Harry's changes the rules for those super flaky days when you need quick relief.

For less than $ 10, you can get the anti-dandruff formula containing pythion zinc to fight even the toughest cases.

The shampoo even comes in three different strengths (with slightly different formulas) - dry scalp, anti-dandruff, and extra strong anti-dandruff - to better suit your needs.

The best drugstore dandruff shampoo

Dove DermaCare Scalcalp Dryness & Itch Relief Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($ 3.44, originally $ 4.88;

amazon.com

)

We can personally attest to how effective the Dove DermaCare Collection is in fighting stubborn dandruff.

This dry and itchy relief shampoo is, again, formulated with pythione zinc to properly care for your dandruff and accompanying symptoms.

For less than $ 5, you can get rid of a flaky scalp while enjoying the soothing scents of coconut and shea butter.

Best Color Safe Dandruff Shampoo

African Black Soap Charcoal Deep Cleansing Shampoo ($ 11.49;

target.com

)

Jamal advises that those with colored hair should avoid products that contain the ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).

Essentially these can be too harsh and strip your hair of the color or nutrients it needs.

She recommends this shampoo from Shea Moisture.

It is made with tea tree oil and willow bark extract for a deep clean that removes build-up while soothing the scalp without damaging its color.

Critics also love it because it controls oil without drying out hair.

The best shampoo for oily hair and dandruff

Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Serum ($ 32;

sephora.com

)

Wu recommends this scalp treatment serum due to the charcoal and tea tree oil.

“Charcoal is good for oilier hair.

It helps absorb dirt and oil, ”he explains.

The charcoal can remove buildup, while the tea tree, peppermint and aloe mixture works to reduce itching and soothe the scalp.

This vegan and cruelty-free treatment is super lightweight.

She advises that if you are looking for a complementary scalp treatment to shampoos, choose a serum, not an oil, unless it is tea tree oil.

The best dandruff shampoo for dry hair

Daily Deep Moisture Head and Shoulder Shampoo ($ 5.99;

target.com

)

According to Wu, this shampoo from the well-known Head & Shoulders brand is ideal for those with dry hair.

This contains 1% pythion zinc, which controls yeast, but is also infused with avocado oil to provide nutrition to each strand.

Jamal also points out that this shampoo is safe for colored hair as well.

The best dandruff shampoo for curly hair

Head & Shoulders Royal Oils Instant Calming Scalp Elixir ($ 9.88, originally $ 10.99;

amazon.com

)

Branching out from its dandruff treatment catalog, Head & Shoulders created the Royal Oils line to address the specific scalp needs of those with curly hair.

Each product is designed with hydration in mind, to lock in moisture while alleviating dry, flaky scalp symptoms.

This scalp elixir is a top of the line product, recommended by both dermatologists.

Contains anti-inflammatory ingredients like niacinamide, menthol, and peppermint oil to help relieve itching after each use.

The best dandruff shampoo bar

Ethique Heali Kiwi Shampoo Bar ($ 15.99;

amazon.com

)

Trying to be more aware of how much plastic you are buying and throwing away?

A shampoo bar is your solution.

Ethique's Heali Kiwi Shampoo Bar is a favorite for both its commitment to green beauty and its ability to treat sensitive scalps.

The bar contains oatmeal, coconut oil, neem oil, and karanja oil to resolve itchiness without weighing down hair.

Best Intermediate Shampoo Treatment

Christophe Robin Purifying Scalp Scrub With Sea Salt (starting at $ 19;

sephora.com

)

Shoppers love this scalp scrub from Christophe Robin.

The scrub works with sea salt to remove debris from the scalp while using sweet almond oil to soothe sensitivity or itchiness.

Wu recommends that those with oily hair use a scalp scrub between shampoos.

And while this scrub is meant to be used as a shampoo, she only advises using an scrub once or twice a week so you don't flake your skin too much.

The best anti-dandruff shampoo with tea tree oil

Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo ($ 18.70, originally $ 22.02;

amazon.com

)

If you're looking for a more natural shampoo to treat your dandruff, a tea tree oil-based shampoo might be worth it.

Although it may not be as effective as a zinc treatment, Wu shares that the oil has anti-yeast effects to balance the scalp.

She recommends Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Specialty Shampoo, a beloved option for thoroughly cleansing the scalp, leaving it with that cooling and calming tingling sensation.

The best dandruff shampoo with CAV

Ouai Detox Shampoo (starting at $ 30;

sephora.com

and

nordstrom.com

)

Apple cider vinegar is another natural ingredient known to help treat dandruff, and it is a key ingredient in Ouai's Detox Shampoo.

According to Wu, CAV has antimicrobial properties to help kill yeast and is acidic enough to remove dead skin cells.

However, in most cases, it is not strong enough to adequately control yeasts like pythion zinc does.

So if you're experiencing milder flaking, this formula works with keratin and chelating agents to literally detoxify your hair while strengthening it.

Better yet, it doesn't contain SLS, which means it's safe for colored hair.

The best dandruff shampoo with salicylic acid

Oribe Serene Anti-Dandruff Scalp Shampoo ($ 39.10, originally $ 46;

amazon.com

)

Let's state the obvious: this bottle of Oribe will look Instagram-worthy in your shower.

Luckily not only is it pretty but it works, because according to buyers, this dandruff shampoo is just as good at relieving their scalp problems as it is beautiful.

Sulfate-free and formulated with salicylic acid, this shampoo can break down dead skin cells, reduce itching, and gently cleanse.

It also contains caffeine to energize hair follicles and different extracts that can help protect against breakage and damage.

In general, treating dandruff requires listening to the scalp, as successful treatment really depends on the severity of the dandruff.

According to our experts, try using your dandruff shampoo once a week and then see how your hair responds.

You may need to increase the frequency if you are not seeing results.

If your symptoms don't go away, consider seeing a dermatologist.
