Health authorities warn that a "high-level contagion phase" is approaching with the arrival of winter and the holidays. And the greatest risk comes from someone who seems harmless.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English) issued a guideline this Friday in which for the first time they urge the use of masks indoors at all times, except at home, due to record numbers of infections and deaths from the coronavirus.

In its weekly report, the CDC warned that the United States entered

"a high-level contagion phase

The arrival of winter and low temperatures, along with the end of the year holidays, lead to more people gathering indoors, which increases the risk of contagion.

The use of masks is necessary indoors as it is more difficult to maintain social distance, the report indicates.

It is also recommended for use in the home when any of the people who live there have been infected or may have been exposed to the virus.

The report highlights that half of the infections occur from people who do not show symptoms of the disease despite being infected.

The recommendation is released after the president-elect, Joe Biden, indicated that he will ask citizens to wear a mask during the first 100 days of his mandate from January 2021. The measure will be mandatory in federal buildings or in the media interstate transportation, areas where the federal government has authority to enforce the standard.
