The Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, is facing a serious food crisis announced on Tuesday July 5 the World Food Program (WFP), which is requesting "

," said Tomson Phiri, spokesperson for the organization, at a press conference in Geneva.
Persistent insecurity
Nearly half of the Central African population, or 2.2 million people, currently suffers from acute food insecurity.
This situation is due in particular to the persistent insecurity and the displacement of populations in the country, which has been plagued by a civil war since 2013. It is aggravated by the conflict in Ukraine, which is pitting two of the world's main cereal producers against each other, causing an increase in food prices.
The WFP expects a 30% increase in the price of rice from August, while increases reach 67% for wheat flour and 70% for vegetable oil, the spokesman said.
Faced with an increase in the cost of its operations in the field, the UN organization is calling for "
immediate funding
" to the tune of 68.4 million dollars to cope.

If we don't have money, we will have to take food from those who are hungry and give it to those who are even more hungry.

The second least developed country in the world according to the UN, the Central African Republic should continue to depend on humanitarian aid in 2023, he added.
This sub-Saharan African country thus joins Yemen, Afghanistan and South Sudan as the countries with the highest proportion of people suffering from acute food insecurity.
